CARITAS MANILA is the lead church NPO operating in the philippines, with social services and integrated family development programs for the poor and the vulnerable. Its key intervention programs for poverty alleviation are in education and economics to benefit its youth and family partners.
It directly serves the 13 vicariates of the Archdiocese and provides technical assistance to parish social services and development ministries, and acts as catalyst for capacity-building and networking for five other Metro Manila dioceses.
We live up to our name CARITAS, which means love in perfection. Through our programs and services, we aim to concretize the love of God among 52 percent of Metro Manila's population who are poor, the "least, last and lost" among us. Caritas Manila, then known as Catholic Charities, founded on October 1953 by the late Archbishop of Manila Rufino Cardinal Santos. He conceived it to be "a social welfare program with the purpose of uplifting the spirit of the unfortunate members of our community, to assist them in all their needs, and to bring the help of God in their miseries and distress."
In 1975, when His Eminence Jaime Cardinal Sin became the Archbishop of Manila, Catholic Charities was renamed Caritas Manila (CM). Agencies involved in the social apostolate were placed under the leadership of CM to ensure better coordination and delivery of services.
Under the leadership of His Eminence Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales, the directive for CM is to scale up its programs and services to achieve significant levels (30% of urban poor families in Metro Manila).
How to Volunteer:
Caritas Manila enjoins all Catholics in Metro Manila to volunteer their time, talent and treasure in the parish’s social services and development ministry.
This is a long-term involvement that brings together people with a heart for service, gives an outlet for their zeal, and deepens their commitment through continuing formation and exposure to our less fortunate brethren.
